Fine Day at Fairwood Airport.
Again with thanks to Rob Allender.
I can almost smell the Castrol 'R'. & somewhere in this mass is the famous Velocette 'Roarer' which always apeared to have 2 engines!!
N.B. Anyone with more pics?, they can be copied into this website & originals promptly returned.

2 years later
'Jack' E F Phillips of Tycoch on the Machine he raced at Fairwood & then rode to Epynt to race it in the Brit Mainland TT then Isle of Man & raced it there as well, 'had a high placing too!.
'Jack' E F Phillips, 1952 his ZB32 BSA

Below is the Kieft Car Raced at Fairwood by Stirling Moss & which was the design of Cyril Kieft who lived at Langland Bay, these were produced in various prototype forms initially with 500 HRD motors, briefly used J&A of Prestwich's sturdy Speedway JAP powerplant later using Dearden & Lancefield Manx Norton engines..... They were produced at Bridgend at what became known as the 'Sospan Factory' & where Norton racer Cliff Edwards would sometimes work & his great friend Graham 'GG' Price, a fellow great Solo Racer of the era accompanied the team on trips to venues, in UK & abroad.
Danny Thomas, in the helmet was the first driver of this Kieft powered by HRD 500 motor, this team is pictured here at Shelsley Walsh, Wyndham May was getting his pic taken at the wheel.
Stirling Moss in the Kieft
The Kieft at Silverstone 1952 with a young Stirling Moss the front pusher! it placed 3rd, next day at Brussels it suffered a heavy crash with bad damage, it was never quite clear whether it's remains became surreptitiously rebuilt by Ray Martin & sold to Gordon Jones, this car still exists owned now by Merrick Taylor.
Here is a rare pic supplied by Kieft Historian, ex racer Brian Jenkins, a rebodied 'again version extended forward to allow for taller drivers. 'any info out there or pictures too?
A young Stirling Moss's posh Jaguar itself shown here at Fairwood was an attraction to all.
Here is the same car, same man, many years after!
Kieft is shown on this Programme racing at Lydstep the previous year & it raced at Lydstep the year shown on the programme. the late Dave James of New Hedges was one of the top riders competing & Machine ridden at Lydstep by Sam Seston who rode for Earnie Earles of Erdington is still in use & was recently used at Brooklands.
Today Lydstep Westward, just along from from Tenby is nowadays a Caravan Park, here is a pic showing Lydstep Point where as a diver I used to catch Lobsters, Caldey Island too is just off the shore here.
Ernie Earles's alloy welded structures for racers like John Storr & sidecar racer Bill Boddice were incredible. Pictures of the machine used at Lydstep PLUS Eppynt TT Races shown below. The great & 'gently maturing!' motorcycle enthusiast Peter Joseph of Llanelli was approached at Brooklands as to whether any records existed of Hill Climbs where the machine shown below could have been used. In the Lydstep Programme we were able to locate Sam Seston as rider with Ernie Earles as his entrant plus the type/size motor in the programme here & cross check in Eppynt programmes.
Here we see the still existing machine developed by Earnie Earles, 'famous Erdington based Alloy welding expert & whose handiwork can be seen on this 350cc JAP powered machine which won the 350 Racing machines Cup [which can be seen on the homepage of this website] at PENDINE, then had a 500cc motor installed to win and set a record at that year's Lydstep Hill Climb Earnie Earles invented the EARLES TYPE forks source mentioned above. (a part source of info on this:-Peter Jo. riding a Cotton gave me a fair caning when I had my first try at competitive Scrambling at Brynamman on a 200cc Triumph powered DOT framed hybrid on Methanol, Peter Jo. still rides in Vintage Events Such as the Saundersfoot Run & others. Peter flings his superbly fettled Royal Enfield Vee Twin around superbly & remains an extremely prominent figure in the VMCC activities in West Wales).
Peter Jo was an early member of 'LLANELLY VIKINGS' Motorcycle Club, joining Colin Morgan after PJ received his genuine Full Montague Burton 'demob' suit after National Service. The Club was founded by Harry Williams & LLANELLY VIKINGS had a superb Trophy for their Premier Rallies & Peter won this 3 times consecutively & is the long term Outright Holder. Top Welsh Scrambler Derek Atkins had won this Trophy when he was just 16 yrs of age. The Trophy itself a burnished head from a now vintage Rover Car was funded & presented by W. (Bill) Church originally of Mumbles, it's superb Plinth had been produced by Sam Wilson at Sandy Wagon Repair's Workshop. Competition & superb preparations standards saw races involving Colin Morgan, another superb rider & His Velo (which was originally 'Big Eric's race machine) PJ rode this at at Pendine Races & it still survives in the hands of Simon Joseph. 'Big Eric' Williams you will see in the 1963 Carmarthen Park pic. then as an ACU steward, LLANELLY VIKINGS had other great riders like Len Hughes, Harry Williams, Vincent Williams, Cliff Bowen, Griff Thomas.
Peter not only rode at Pendine races, he was involved competed in masses of motorcycle events including Scrambles & Trials & Fairwood Races & was taken by Mike Davies to train & travel to places like Brands Hatch with John Neald & others as mechanic for the Keift team, the skills still last & below is what he now competes on...With vigour!.
A sneak pic. of Peter Joseph's Royal Enfield whilst he lunched at Porthgain at halfway stage of the 2002 Saundersfoot Run, I watched him 'park the machine' which needed no attention & launch, assisted by son Simon into a major Barbour suit trousers removal operation before sauntering off to lunch!.
Welcombe House at the Strand area of Swansea has a showroom still existing which is where the Machines were displayed, Kieft initially felt these machines could help further his aims to produce bubble cars type transport. In 1952 the machines were displayed in action at Aberdare Park, Lydstep Hill Climb and at the massive Eppynt TT Race Circuit, 5.2 miles in the Mynnydd Epynt range it too still exists.
Something of actual provenance remains
Here is a record of previous CK involvements (Not Calvin Klein)
On show at Aberdare Park, this started as simply a picture with an old cliche caption, however Brian Goode noticed the chap in a sports jacket was Sid Wragge, an East South Wales ACU timekeeper of the period, Brian is son of Howard 'Tiny' Goode who was heavily involved with Cardiff Motorcycles & Car Club and ACU ESW Competitions. Brian still treasures Sid Wragge's protectively boxed timing apparatus which after all is first to record & verify actual records as & when acheived wherever they are made, timekeepers checked history & when certain announced to all that an advance or progress had been witnessed.
